The invited guest speaker of the session is Ms. Fazilet Cinaralp, Secretary General of the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA), who will be making a presentation on regulatory challenges and market opportunities for End-of-Life Tyres.
Mrs. Cinaralp is a senior government affairs professional and an internationally recognized expert in the areas of sustainability, trade facilitation and industry covering regulations, governance, and technology innovation. She has more than 20 years’ experience in the automotive sector, in particular in the European tyres and rubber industry.
As a matter of fact, recent statistics indicate that 75% of Europe’s ELTs designed for material recovery - equivalent to more than 1.4 million tonnes per annum - are channeled into granulation, for which end-of-use applications remain a challenge. Furthermore, many outlets for rubber infill have closed and a significant number of municipalities are declining to use it. Therefore, it is time to look for alternative and sustainable markets and solutions, and for the maintenance of a balanced portfolio of possible recovery technologies, while seeking further cooperation on standardisation activities for ELT-derived materials.
The meeting will also discuss the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)’s opinion about their harmonised system of judgements for rubber granules, possible health impacts and environmental effects of other substances contained in granulate derived from ELTs, as well as the results of ETRMA’s ERASSTRI assessment of exposure and potential risks to human health associated with the use of ELT recycled crumb in synthetic turf fields.
The Tyres & Rubber Committee under the new chairmanship of Max Craipeau of Greencore Resources in Hong Kong (CHN) is expecting you for a very interesting programme during the upcoming BIR World Recycling Convention & Exhibition (Round-Table Sessions) in Budapest.
On Monday, 14 October at 16:30, Mr Craipeau is going to cover the following key topics, which are of great importance for any company active in the end-of-life tyre and rubber sector:
- The recent developments on the European Commission “ban” project on synthetic turf,
- The material recovery minimum set by ELT Management companies and the related legislation,
- A circular economy model for tyres and rubber.
